15-Year-Old Boy Killed in St. Louis Car Accident

A 15-year-old boy was killed during a car accident on October 1st. The driver of the vehicle failed to properly steer the vehicle when he struck a curb and hit a street sign, fire hydrant and tree. The young boy was on the passenger side which sustained the most damage in the accident. While the driver sustained injuries, the young boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Car accidents happen in the blink-of-an-eye, and can cause permanent injuries and sometimes death. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 37,461 lives lost in the U.S. in 2016 due to car accidents. The data shows that the leading cause of these accidents is speeding, drunk driving, and not wearing a seatbelt. It is important that car accident awareness is increased because it can save communities a lot of time, pain and money.

Car Accident Statistics

There were more than 900 vehicle fatalities in Missouri in 2016, and most of these could have been avoided by people being more aware of how common car accidents truly are. It can be difficult to think that a tragic car accident can happen to you, but the truth is in the numbers. Online crash reports such as the one made available by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and this one made by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department are good resources to see how many traffic accidents happen every day in St. Louis and Missouri.

The most common types of traffic accident collisions are:

  • Rear-end collisions due to distracted or unsafe driving
  • Side-impact collisions due to not being aware of other drivers and lack of focusing on the road
  • Rollovers which can occur due to speeding
  • Single-car accidents due to distracted or under-the-influence driving
  • Head-on collisions which are often fatal

While the causes of these collisions can vary, the impact of them has the same effect; pain, sadness, and confusion that can be avoided by practicing safe driving.

The effects of car accidents are serious and can be deadly. When driving, stay focused on the road, pay attention to other drivers around you, factor in extreme weather conditions that might affect road safety, and avoid driving if you’re intoxicated or drowsy. Other factors such as not speeding and avoiding unsafe cars should be noted as well. By following these safe driving tips, roads and highways can become safer.

What To Do After a Car Accident

If you or someone you care about is involved in a car accident, it is important to document the scene (scuffs, skid marks, etc.), swap contact information with the other party that is involved in the accident, and make sure not to give a statement to the other party’s insurance company before consulting a lawyer. Insurance companies will try to take advantage of the chaoticness of the situation, and attempt to record an incriminating statement that will allow them to pay less than the victim of the accident deserves. By contacting a car accident lawyer, you’re ensuring that your rights are protected during this stressful time.
