Amtrak Train collides with SUV in Warrensburg, MO
In a Warrensburg, Missouri crash, a 42-year-old grandmother and her 3-year-old granddaughter were both seriously injured. The two sustained serious injuries after their SUV was hit by an Amtrak train.
The passenger train, traveling at full speed, was headed east towards Sedalia when it collided with the SUV on the driver’s side. The crash took place at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday near North Mitchell and East Market Streets in Warrensburg. The car was thrown to its side following the collision.
3-year-old Rebecca Langner, of Warrnesburg, was taken by air ambulance to Children’s Mercy where she remains in intensive care. Rebecca’s 42-year-old grandmother, Catherine Downing, also from Warrnesburg, is undergoing surgery at Truman Hospital. Both are listed as being in serious condition.
Friends and family members revealed that the crossing gate hesitated to lower, allowing the SUV to cross onto the tracks. Seeing as the gate did not deny entry, Downing did not look for a train, until it was too late. Emergency scene responders and the Missouri State Highway Patrol are currently investigating the crossing gates.
Neighbors heard sounds of the crash and came running to assist the two injured SUV passengers. According to emergency responders, the Amtrak train was full of 160 passengers, who stayed aboard the train until they were able to move it back to the station. Fortunately, no one on the train was injured.
