Missouri Department of Transportation provides the construction and maintenance needed to ensure that the highways remain in safe conditions. This work is never-ending, which is why there always seems to be some delays or closings due to construction, especially during the summer months. This week alone there are about 40 lane closures in St. Louis due to construction. The summer is also the time for the Department of Transportation to repaint the roadway lines. The striping trucks move between 8 mph and 12 mph when painting. This can be a drastic change of pace for a driver originally traveling at 70 mph. As a result, drivers may have to suddenly brake or even swerve to avoid collisions with the construction workers. The stripping vehicles are equipped with flashing strobe lights and boards displaying arrows. However, often these are not noticed by the driver until too late. The painting is expected to be completed by July; but construction often runs through late fall.

Vehicle accidents account for over 30,000 deaths each year in the United States. On Missouri state highways, there have been already 456 fatalities so far in 2016. Construction and unexpected delays contribute to numerous accidents every day. It is important to remain alert to your surrounding when driving and be prepared for unexpected braking. Unfortunately, not everyone drives with the same caution. If you have been injured in a car crash, you may have a claim.
