Dangers of Distracted Driving – Missouri Personal Injury Information

Distracted driving is quickly becoming one of the leading causes of U.S. motor vehicle accidents. With cell phone usage becoming more prevalent and adding to habits of already distracted drivers, this trend is unfortunately only increasing. The U.S. Department of Transportation is helping in the effort of preventing distracted driving as various statutes have been put into place that punish distracted driving. The President’s Executive Order, for example, recently established a new approach to driving that includes putting mobile devices down while driving and focusing on the task at hand. Mobile devices are one of the main causes of distracted driving in today’s society.

Types of Distracted Driving:

  • Taking one’s mind off the task
  • Taking one’s eyes off of the roadway
  • Taking one’s hands off of the wheel

Example Distractive Tendencies

  • Changing radio station or music selection
  • Conversing with passengers
  • Talking on or texting on a mobile device
  • Drinking and eating
  • Grooming
  • Focusing on maps, reading materials, GPS systems or PDA’s

While all distractive driving tendencies are extremely dangerous, texting is perhaps the most serious as it involves three types of distracted driving: both cognitive, visual and manual. It is no surprise that drivers who use mobile and hand-held devices are around 4 times more likely to be in a car accident and to injure themselves. It is extremely important to put the cell phone in an enclosed area where the temptation to use it while driving is decreased. Furthermore, help decrease the risk of car accidents by not using a mobile device in the car under any circumstance. Aside from cell phone use, all distracted driving tendencies are dangerous and should not be practiced while operating an automobile.

By focusing on driving and not engaging in use of a mobile device or practicing distracting driving tendencies, one can significantly decrease their individual risk of accidents. Unfortunately, your actions may not be enough as the distracted driving of others represents potential problems. If you or someone you know has been harmed in accident that was caused by a negligent and distracted driver, it is important that you get a hold of a Missouri injury lawyer at your earliest convenience.
