Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Safety Initiatives

The United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is tasked with regulating the conduct of commercial motor vehicles and motor carriers traveling across the U.S.  Among the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Safety (FMCSA) Initiatives is their new Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP). The Pre-Employment Screening Program allows employers to make better informed hiring choices by providing employers to electronic access to a driver’s inspection and crash history. This information is compiled in the FMCSA’s Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS). The hope is to reduce the growing number of deadly truck accidents in America.

Employer’s in the motor carrier industry now have an extremely valuable tool to assist in hiring safe quality drivers. The the Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP) compiles records of drivers past serious safety violations and individual operators’ crash history to evaluate a potential employee’s driving history. The trucking industry has a terrible habit of hiring dangerous and under qualified drivers to transport freight across the nations communities.

Accessing the PSP database is a simple quick tool that will greatly reduce the ability of dangerous semi-truck drivers to get behind the wheel of these enormous vehicles. Employers accessing the PSP database will pay $10 to view a driving history, in addition to a $100 annual subscription fee.

The use of a centralized database such as the PSP is keeping motorists safe from the deadly effects of dangerous truck drivers. A typical semi-trailer truck, also known as semi, 18-wheeler, mack truck, tractor trailer, truck and trailer, big rig, etc., is generally a 3 axle truck weighing as much as 80,000 lbs. These extremely large trucks are capable of unimaginable destruction if placed in the hands of the wrong driver.

The average truck driver is often under an incentive based pay structure. They are paid per mile driven and placed under a great deal of pressure to log as many miles as possible. Truck drivers are often driving these vehicles sleep deprived or drug assisted in order to generate the most revenue possible. This irresponsible method of freight transportation results in far too many tractor trailer accidents.

Motorists driving passenger sedans stand little chance of fairing well when faced with a the weight and size of a semi truck. It is extremely important to hold the trucking industry responsible for the harms and losses they inflict through the negligent hiring of known dangerous commercial motor vehicle drivers. This is especially true when employers have easy access to databases such as the Pre-Employment Screening Program. There is no excuse to needlessly place our communities at risk.

If you or a loved one has been injured or killed in a truck crash, you should immediately contact a truck accident lawyer to fight for the reimbursement of your harms and losses. The semi trucking industry is insured by large insurance corporations who immediately go to work gathering information related to the crash for the trucking companies.
