Freezing Rain Causes Multiple St. Louis Accidents

Freezing rain across Missouri on January 21, 2012, has caused numerous car and truck crashes. Rain and ice began to coat Missouri and Illinois roadways between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. The Missouri Department of Transportation issued multiple reports of accidents across the east Illinois and St. Louis area. A terrible crash near the Missouri River and Interstate 70 forced the closure of all eastbound lanes of traffic for a significant period of time just after 5:00 p.m. In addition, St. Louis police reported that Interstate 55 northbound near Gascondae and Arsenal was closed due to several vehicles piling up.  Illinois State Police have also reported a heavy volume of car and truck accidents due to inclement winter weather.

St. Louis City residents reported treacherous sidewalk and road conditions. St. Louis City businesses scrambled to apply salt and deicers to sidewalks as the ice accumulated. The Missouri Department of Transportation took precautions to ensure Missouri Roadways were better prepared this time around.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has reported they will delay the two week shutdown of the ramp at Sixth Street and eastbound 40. MoDOT also reports cancellation of the closure of Interstate 64 (Highway 40) between the Poplar Street Bridge and Jefferson Avenue set to begin this weekend. The closure of Highway 40 is now set for next weekend (January 27 through the 30) and the two week shutdown of the Sixth Street ramp will begin January 28th.

Missouri and Illinois motorists should remember to use extra caution when driving in winter weather conditions. Education on winter driving tips can help reduce accidents and save lives. Icy roadways do not relieve drivers of their safe driving duty. If you are injured through the negligent driving of another, you should immediately contact an Illonois or Missouri accident lawyer to obtain information on your right of reimbursement. Accidents are the result of a failure to exercise the appropriate level of care. If you cause an accident, you responsible for reimbursing injured parties for all of their harms and losses.  Be careful out there!

In addition, business owners have a duty to remove snow and ice from their premises. While business owners do not have to catch snow and ice as it falls, they do have a duty to take precautions for approaching inclement weather. In addition, business owners must take steps to remove ice and snow in order to make their property safe for customers. If you have been injured in a slip and fall accident as the result of falling on accumulated ice and snow on the property of another, contact a St. Louis premises lawyer to discuss reimbursement for your injury.
