Halloween Accident Prevention

Halloween is associated with the three specific types of accidents: home fires, pedestrian accidents, and falls. In fact, a recent study which reviewed more than four million Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) records, found that Halloween is the deadliest day of the year for child pedestrian accidents. Take the time to remind yourself of why Halloween can be so deadly and what can be done to make sure your night is a safe one!

Halloween Pedestrian Accident Prevention

Sperlings BestPlaces’ study of the FARS records also revealed that the deadliest hour for Halloween pedestrian accidents was from 6:00 p.m – 7:00 p.m. The study found that this time period was responsible for over 1/4 of all accidents. In addition, the study reported that sixty percent of all Halloween accidents occurred between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Sperlings’ study also revealed:

  • Due to the nature of trick-or-treating, seventy percent of the accidents did NOT occur in an intersection or cross-walk, but in the middle of the block.
  • Children aged 12-15 represented 32% of all child fatalities, and children aged 5-8 represented 23%.
  • Young drivers (ages 15-25) are responsible for almost 1/3 of all accidents fatalities involving child pedestrians on October 31.
  • Older drivers ranging from 61-65 and 36-40 represent ranges of driver responsible for the fewest Halloween child pedestrian deaths.

The good news is that child pedestrian accidents and fatalities on Halloween are declining. To continue this trend, please keep the following Halloween accident prevention tips in mind:

  • Take a flash light with you
  • Wear reflective clothing
  • Children should always be accompanied by an adult
  • Drivers should slow down and try not to drive if possible from 5:00-9:00 p.m.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street
  • Stay on side walks and cross the street at cross walks
  • Be a safe pedestrian

Halloween Fire Accident Prevention

A recent National Fire Prevention Association study estimated that Halloween decorations were the first item ignited in an average of 1,000 home fires between 2006 and 2010. Whether the decorations were set to close to electrical outlets or the product itself was defective, the following safety measures will help prevent home fires on Halloween:

  • Keep decorations away from electrical outlets
  • Do not over use an electrical outlet
  • Make sure to keep candles in safe locations, away from blankets and drapes
  • Make sure to put candles out at the end of the night
  • Keep candles away from locations were pets can knock them over
  • Rake all leaves out of yard

Halloween Premises Falls

The nature of children running all over the place in the dark is a setup for unwanted falls. Homeowners should remember that they are responsible for dangers on their property that they know about or should have known about, as well as any injuries caused by your pets. It is important to keep the following safety measures in mind to prevent child slip and fall accidents:

  • Rake up all leaves and remove fallen debris from your property
  • Make sure there are no holes in your yard
  • Make sure you porch and doorway are safe for trick-or-treaters
  • Make sure all gates to pools are properly secured
  • Make sure your animals are properly restrained

Stay Safe

Keeping these safety tips in mind will go a long way towards a Safe Halloween. However, despite all safety measures, others may not undertake the same responsibility. If you are injured this Halloween through the negligent or reckless conduct of another, you are entitled to reimbursement for your harms and losses.
