More Than 6,000 Pedestrians Are Killed Every Year in Pedestrian Traffic Accidents
Pedestrian traffic accidents can occur in many different ways, but often result in critical injuries or fatalities. In 2018, 6,227 pedestrians were killed in accidents involving motor vehicles, and according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, the record of pedestrian traffic accidents is at an all-time high in the U.S. The most common causes of pedestrian related traffic crashes is distracted driving, failure to yield, drugs and alcohol and turning accidents.
The biggest dilemma with pedestrian traffic accidents is determining who is at fault in the accident. If a driver makes an improper turn and hits a pedestrian, is under the influence, hits a pedestrian while they are using a crosswalk, or is otherwise negligent, they are likely responsible for the accident. However, in some accidents, responsibility falls on the pedestrian. If a pedestrian fails to use a crosswalk when crossing the street or walks into the road when there is a visible oncoming car, they could be at fault in the accident. The best way to prevent a pedestrian traffic accident, as either a driver or pedestrian, is to:
- Stay Alert – both drivers and pedestrians should stay alert at all times when on the road and constantly take note of their surroundings
- Use Crosswalks – pedestrians should always use a crosswalk when crossing the road if available, and drivers should yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
- Avoid Drugs & Alcohol – driving under the influence impairs a drivers ability to be aware of their surroundings and take measures to avoid a potential pedestrian accident, while in almost half of all pedestrian accidents alcohol consumption is a factor
- Pay Attention to Road Signs – drivers should pay attention to road signs, especially pedestrian crosswalk signals, and pedestrians should only cross when the road is free of traffic
