Number of Metro East Illinois Fatal Car Accidents Increasing
According to the Illinois State Police, the number of fatal accidents in the Metro East is up around 28 percent this year. 25 crashes resulting in 27 fatalities have already occurred this year in Madison, Clinton, Bond, Monroe and St. Clair counties. St. Clair County has seen its fatal crash statistics almost double. During the first half of 2010, the county reported seven fatal accidents where seven were left dead. As of this May, St. Clair County has already had 14 fatal crashes, which left 15 people dead. Madison, Monroe and Clinton counties face similar grim increases in fatality statistics.
The Illinois State Police attribute the cause of the auto crashes to drivers failing to yield the right-of-way, speeding, improper use of lanes, following other cars too closely, and driving under the influence. The majority of these fatal accidents have occurred on state highways or city streets. So far this year in the Metro East, 273 fatal crashes have occurred which resulted in 297 deaths.
