Pharmaceutical Birth Defects Attorney: New Warning for Topamax-related Birth Defects

Prescription drug, Topamax that is most commonly used to treat both migraines and epilepsy has recently been linked to several birth defects.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently increased the warnings associated with this drug.  This particular drug is manufactured by Johnson and Johnson, but its generic forms also increase the risk of birth defects.  The FDA has released that in order to prevent birth defects related to Topamax, other therapies and treatments need to be pursued.

In their study of the drug, the FDA found that there is a direct correlation between Topamax (topiramate) and an increased risk for cleft lip and cleft palate.  A cleft lip or palate occurs when lip or palate does not completely fuse together during pregnancy.  Doctors have been encouraged to warn patients of these risks if they are at childbearing age.  If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, alternate treatments should be used to prevent these birth defects.  Topiramate is also found in certain weight loss drugs such as Qnexa, which is manufactured by Vivus Incorporated.  The FDA is currently requiring further studies on birth defects from Vivus and other drug companies that manufacture Topiramate weight loss pills.

Topamax (Topiramate) Birth Defects:

Aside from cleft palate and cleft lip, Topamax has also been linked to heart defects, lung defects, brain defects and arm and limb defects.  The FDA recently changed the drugs pregnancy rating from C to D to reflect birth defect risks that accompany this drug.  Reflecting this change, the new Topamax label lightly warns of the potential association between the drug and birth defects, but prior to this recent change, no such warning existed.

Topamax Lawsuit

Topamax lawsuits are being filed against Johnson and Johnson nationwide; and in Topamax cases unrelated to birth defects, Johnson and Johnson has been forced to pay multi-million dollar fines.  The new information that Topamax increases the risk of and actually causes birth defects is opening up new avenues for lawsuits.  If your child was born with a birth defect and you were taking Topamax while pregnant or breastfeeding, it is imperative that you speak with our qualified Topamax lawyer about your rights in this matter.  To talk to a pharmaceutical birth defects attorney, call 314.409.7060 or 855.402.7274 at your earliest convenience.
