Be Ready, Be Buckled Contest Winners Announced

The Department of Transportation recently released the 2013 Art Contest Winners for their safety belt through art intiative. The Children are promoting the “Be Ready. Be Buckled.” seat belt campaign, which aims to teach children the importance of wearing seat belts to potentially reduce car crash injury.

United States Secretary of Transportion Ray LaHood congratulated the two winning elementary school students: a third grader from Missouri and a second grade student from Maryland. The Safety Belt Student Art Contest sponspored by the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Belt Partnership, held the awards ceremony at the United States Department of Transportation’s headquaters. National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator David Stricklannd and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrator Deputy Bill Bronrott joined secretary LaHood in honoring the students.

Secretary LaHood noted that buckling ones seatbelt is the easiest and most efficient way to be safe on American highways, and that the student art contest helps convey that message to the children designing the posters, and to the truck and bus drivers who will see them year round.

Third grade student Reilly Taylor from Independence, Missouri and second grade student Caleb Zhao from Gaithersburg, Maryland won the contest for their superb illustrations. The students’ illustrations show the need for commerical truck and bus drivers to buckle their seatbelts every time they get behind the wheel. The winners were given framed replicas of their drawings and a monetary prize. Both winners were joined by ten other artistically talented students who were also recognized for their outstanding contest artwork. Together, these twelve student contest entries will be featured in the 2014 “Be Ready. Be Buckled.” art contest calenders that will be avaliable for sale this coming fall.

The student are contest “Be Ready. Be Buckled”is organized by the Commerical Motor Vehicle Safety Belt Partnership which includes NHTSA, FMCSA, and 30 other related government agencies and organizations. The contest is open annually to students in kindergarten to sixth grade with relatives in the commercial truck and bus industries. The contest dually educates children about highway driving safety and urges commercial drivers to buckle up on every single trip.

What are the real risks of not wearing your seatbelt?

  • Death: The largest risk of not wearing a seat belt is death, as seat belts reduce the risk of death by around 45 percent. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that around sixty percent of all people killed in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing their seat belts. Ultimately, the failure to wear a seat belt while in a car or vehicle is the cause of more deaths than ANY other behavior.
  • Serious Injury: Many individuals sustain serious and critical injuries from car accidents where they were not wearing their seatbelt. Many people end up with critical injuries if involved in car accidents and they are not wearing a seat belt. These injuries typically include broken bones, contusions or bruises, herniated discs, traumatic brain injuries, and paralysis.  If you are wearing a seat belt, the risk of moderate or critical injuries is reduced by around 50 percent, according to the American College of Emergency Physicians.
  • Fines or License Penalty Points: Numerous legal issues can arise if you are caught not wearing a seat belt.  Most states, including Missouri, have laws about seat belt use, and use fines for the individuals not abiding by those laws.
