Rockview, Missouri Train Crash Leads to Several Injuries

Several cars were damaged and injuries were sustained following the collision of two freight trains, which lead to the collapse of a highway overpass in Rockview, Missouri this Saturday. The massive collision between two freight trains near Missouri’s Scott County took place at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday and is extremely noteworthy. First off, the collision caused the state Route M overpass to collapse and crumble, injuring seven people, and causing extensive vehicle damage. Similarly, this was the third railroad crash to take place in Rockview, Missouri in 2013.

The latest train collision involved a freight train owned by the BNSF Railway Company, and a second train owned by the Union Pacific Corporation. The former train T-boned the latter, causing it to derail, and the derailed train hit a pillar, which caused the overpass to collapse, according to the Scott County sheriff’s office. Before coming to an end, the crash also sparked a fire, as diesel fuel leaked out of the train engines. Around a dozen train cars were involved in the derailment.

There were seven people injured in the crash, five who had been in vehicles on the highway overpass, and two who were working on the trains. All seven were treated at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau during the holiday weekend.

According to Mark Shelton, a prominent Missouri Department of Transportation engineer, the damage caused from the collision is extremely extensive. The Department of Transportation is going to have to end up removing the bridge in its entirety and replacing it, a project that Shelton guesses will cost around $3 million dollars.

The bridge is anticipated to reopen in September, after one or both of the railroad companies pays the tab for its replacement. However, the National Transportation Safety Board investigation into the causes of the accident is still in an early stage. The results of the investigation will figure out liability. In the meantime, cleanup of the collapsed Missouri highway overpass continued until Monday, more than 48 hours after the train collision led to the catastrophic chain reaction.

Of course, as in most accidents, one of the parties in this crash is liable and responsible for reimbursing not only the losses experienced by the Missouri Highway Patrol, but also for the harms and damages experienced by the individuals injured in this horrific collision. If you or a loved one has been injured or killed in a crash that was caused by the negligence of another individual or entity, you may be entitled to compensation.
