Be Safe Today at Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras in St. Louis is in full swing. Mari Gras is a celebration which begins on the Epiphany and comes to an end on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. In its most direct translation, Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”. Fat Tuesday is the practiced tradition of the last night of eating unhealthy foods before Lenton season’s ritual fasting the next day. While Mardi Gras is not observed nationally in the United States, it took hold in cities across the nation with traditionally ethic french populations. The celebration of Mardi Gras is the largest in New Orleans, the Capital of Louisiana. In 1830, Cowbellion de Rakin Society, was the first masked organization to celebrate Mardi Gras with a Parade. While in the past Mardi Gras was a more calm celebration with extravagant parade floats, ornate masks, and decorations, today is has taken on a different image. Today’s image is that of partying teenagers and hedonism.

Mardi in the United State is responsible for countless local St. Louis car accidents and wrongful deaths. Whether it is from drinking and driving, or alcohol poising, Mardi Gras can be a dangerous event. Those attending the festivities should be safe and take cabs.
