Six People Injured in Tractor-Trailer Accident on Gravois Avenue
St. Louis, MO. – Six people were critically injured in a tractor-trailer accident that happened early this morning just before 2 a.m.
The crash occurred when the tractor-trailer swerved to avoid a car that was swerving back and forth, but the vehicles collided, hitting a parked car in the process.
According to the St. Louis Police Department, the six people that were injured in the accident were taken to the hospital in critical condition, but at this time, further details have yet to be released.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 4,102 people were killed in large truck accidents in the U.S. in 2017. On average, it takes commercial trucks 525 feet to come to a complete stop, so if a passenger vehicle stalls or swerves in front of a tractor-trailer, it is nearly impossible for a commercial vehicle to avoid hitting it. The most common factors involved in a tractor-trailer car accident are speeding, distracted driving, driving under the influence, driver fatigue, and other types of negligence.
Fault in a tractor-trailer crash doesn’t automatically fall onto the truck driver. Though a commercial truck driver can be at-fault in a tractor-trailer accident, so can a passenger vehicle driver. If a passenger vehicle driver is under the influence, not exercising caution while driving, speeding, or otherwise negligent and causes an accident with a tractor-trailer, they are liable to compensate the other driver for damages such as medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, property damage, and other expenses caused because of the accident.
