Speeding is one of the top causes of motor vehicle fatalities in the U.S. In 2017, speeding was a contributing factor in approximately 26% of crashes. Speeding is a serious issue that can cause a driver to lose control of their vehicle, increase distractions while driving, and put other drivers at risk of being involved in an accident.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, in 2016, 10,080 people were involved in motor vehicle accidents that involve speeding. While there is a noticeable decrease in speeding accidents in Missouri (15,150 speed-related crashes in 2005), the odds of getting into a speeding accident in Missouri are still high. Speeding accidents are entirely preventable, and often involve additional types of negligence, so why is the crash rate for speeding accidents still so high? The top causes of speeding accidents in Missouri include drunk driving, driver inexperience, and aggressive driving behavior.
