Commercial truck accidents can be catastrophic. Commercial trucks are often 40,000+ pounds, which is at least 20-30 times the weight of a conventional car. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, in 2016 a total of 4,564 people died in to commercial truck accidents. While the cause of these accidents varies, it is important for commercial truck drivers to be more alert on the road, and for passenger vehicles to use caution in their presence. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, at least 3,185 people were injured in Missouri in commercial truck accidents.

There are a number of reasons why commercial truck accidents happen, but the injuries sustained from these accidents are very serious. In addition to the sheer weight of commercial trucks, the cargo that these commercial trucks are carrying can be hazardous or flammable and make accidents more dangerous.

Some common causes of commercial truck accidents include:

  • Speeding
  • Changing lanes abruptly
  • Improper merging in traffic causing vehicles to break quickly
  • Driver fatigue and not exercising caution while around other drivers
  • Distracted driving and fiddling with the radio, phone or other devices

Commercial truck accidents usually cause more damage to passenger vehicles. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, most injuries and deaths in commercial truck crashes happen to passenger vehicle occupants. These commercial truck accidents can prove to be fatal, or can cause serious injuries such as broken bones, internal injuries, back and neck injuries and much more. It is important that if you or someone you love is involved in a commercial truck accident to immediately consult a medical professional to ensure that you’re taken care of during this time.

How Are Commercial Truck Drivers Insured?

Commercial truck drivers are heavily insured by large insurance companies. The negligent commercial truck driver’s insurance company will try to get you to give them a statement at the scene of the accident, but it is important to not incriminate yourself and focus on gathering evidence. Documentation of any damage to you or your car, skid marks on the road or on the side of the road, or anything else that was damaged during the accident can be helpful in protecting you against large insurance companies. It is important to consult a Commercial Truck Accident Lawyer that will protect your rights during this time. An experienced attorney will know how to use the evidence from the accident to your advantage, and will handle talking to the insurance company on your behalf. They will ensure that you get everything you’re entitled to for the injuries you sustained after a commercial truck accident.
