Summer Safety: Tire Care & Maintenance

Tire care and maintenance, while important during every season, is especially critical in warm weather due to higher temperatures, longer trips, heavier loads, and higher speeds. Each of these factors, typical to summer, puts additional stress on your vehicle’s tires.Tire care & maintenance tips:

  • Check tires at regular intervals, looking for visible signs of balding, wear or damage.
  • Make sure tires are inflated properly. Check your vehicle’s tire pressure regularly with a gauge, especially on long trips or in extremely warm weather. It is typically best to measure when tires are cool or cold, before you drive on them. The recommended inflation pressure can be found in the car owner’s manual, on a label that typically sits in the glove box, or near the door latch on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The factory recommended inflation pressure should not be confused with the maximum inflation pressure shown on the tire’s side. At the recommended pressure of inflation, tires will last longer and will be less likely to fail. Similarly, the car will use less fuel. Serious injury can result from tire failure because of overloading or under inflated tires.
  • Do not overload your vehicle. Your car and tires were designed to operate safely ONLY up to their load limits. As stated above, load limits are displayed in the owner’s manual and on the certification plaque on the edge of the driver’s door.
  • Ensure that there is enough tread on the tire in order for it to operate safely. Make sure all tires are wearing normally and evenly. All grooves should be visible and deep enough to at least touch the top of Lincoln’s head if a penny is inserted into the tread. If your tires have low tread or bald spots, they are unsafe and need to be replaced.
  • See a mechanic if tires are wearing unevenly. If some spots on the tire are wearing faster than others, it is important to see a service station or mechanic. This could be a sign that your vehicle has worn shock absorbers, misaligned wheels, or other potentially dangerous problems. Make sure your tires are aligned and balanced properly.
  • In hot weather, in particular, do not drive at a high rate of speed for a long time. Always obey posted speed limits. Driving at too high of a rate in hot weather puts additional stress on tires, increasing your risk of a serious car accident. Also, lower speeds equate to better gas mileage, so driving safe can be a win-win scenario.
