Two Killed in Tractor-Trailer Accident on I-44/I-55 in Downtown St. Louis
St. Louis, MO. Two people were killed in a tractor-trailer accident that happened in downtown St. Louis on Sunday.
The accident happened near the 7th street exit of I-44 around 2:30 p.m., and involved a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle with two occupants.
According to the St. Louis Police Department, the crash occurred when the semi-truck slowed down near a construction zone. The truck driver turned his hazards on to warn other drivers, but once the semi-truck came to a complete stop, the passenger vehicle rear-ended the truck, instantly killing the driver and passenger.
In 2017, 4,102 people died in commercial truck accidents. The majority of deaths were passenger vehicle occupants.
The average commercial vehicle weighs 80,0000 pounds, which is roughly 20 times the size of the average passenger vehicle. If a passenger vehicle is traveling on the highway, at an estimated speed of 40mph+, and rear-ends a tractor-trailer, the impact of the crash alone is enough to critically injure a passenger vehicle’s occupants.
